Building Circuits (TTL to RS-232 level converter)

I recently had the need to connect a purchased electronics module which has a 2400 baud Serial TTL level (output only) interface to a PC’s serial port (difference between them is voltage levels). I could have just bought a converter, such as the “RS232 Serial Interface Module”, but thought I would have a go at making one. I chose a “MAX233CPP” IC for the task.

Parts List:

The set of terminal blocks used for power can be substituted for eg a DC 2.5mm socket (Maplin: JK12N), depending on the requirement

The voltage regulator IC is optional, but should be used if you do not have a regulated power adapter (i.e. one supplying exactly 5V). It is also an idea to add some capacitors as indicated by the data sheet to prevent ripple or voltage oscillations, along with a diode to prevent damage if the power supply is connected in reverse, however I did not have enough room.
